Staff Sergeant Skarman was a Rifleman assigned to Company L, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps; Vietnam. On 15 January 1968, while returning to Khe Sanh from Rest and Recuperation (R&R) at China Beach, South Vietnam, he became missing (helicopter crash returning from R&R). His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. He is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC; VVM Wall, Panel 34e, Line 56.
