He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Baker (Steve); sons, John Michael Black and Gary Black; step-son, Frank Riddick (Sheila); step-daughter, Belinda Scruggs; sister, Bobbie Quarles (Fred); sister-in-law, Tommye Abbott; 9 grand children and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Julia Robertson Black; parents, John Isaac and Allie Biter Black; sisters, Jane McMurry and Margaret Ann Ealy.

John graduated as class president from Grove Tower High School in 1949 and became a proud Vol at the University of Tennessee.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years then joined the Fort Worth Police Department serving for 13 years.

After moving to Knoxville, he worked as a surface mine inspector, then for the Tennessee Department of Transportation while serving in the U.S. Army National Guard where he retired as First Sergeant.

In 1979 John and Julia married and became active members of Bearden Central Baptist Church where they were beloved Sunday School teachers for decades.

When not working or participating in ministry activities, John could be found fishing with friends and eating honey buns on Lake Loudon. One of John's simple pleasures was having a meal on the back porch and working crossword puzzles.
