Mr. David Stevens died at his residence in Williamsburg at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening. Mr. Stevens has been sick for about two weeks or more, but was not thought to be dangerous until the last few days, when he began to sink rapidly. Mr. Stevens was born on October 22, 1816, in the house in which he died. He lived and raised his family in the same house where he is now lying a corpse. Mr. Stevens was first married March 7, 1839, to Jane Donaldson. To his first marriage he was blessed with three children, Sarah, Rachel and James. Of this number but one survives, James, of Allegheny City, Pa. He was again married on November 14, 1850, to Nancy Dopp, to whom he had eight children, viz.: Anna, Robert, Lydia, Florine, Clarence, Pamila, Calvin and Celia, all of whom are dead, except Robert, of Bellwood, and Calvin, of Williamsburg. His second wife preceded him to the "home beyond the blue" about one year.
In the death of Mr. Stevens is removed another landmark of Canal times. He helped to build it, drove one of the packet teams and later he worked as a canal carpenter for years, and was thoroughly conversant with the construction of this once famous highway and the pleasant way of traveling. In addition to this he loved to talk of the days when the keel boat was a means of freight traffic east from here when the stage of weather would permit. Mr. Stevens was a quiet, backward and unobtrusive man, a good citizen and a most excellent neighbor. In our residence here of twenty-four years we have the first time to hear a harsh word or a word in any way detrimental to him. His life was that of a consistent Christian, trusting entirely on the merits of a crucified Savior, putting all his faith and trust in him and obeying, to the best of his ability, the behests of his church, the Lutheran. Funeral today at 9:30 am. Interment in the Lutheran cemetery. Services conducted by his pastor, Rev. B. R. M. Sheeder.
