Willard Rockwell joined the 48th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry,Company F, on November 5, 1861. He was detailed as a nurse, and died from overwork in a regimental hospital at Paducah, Kentucky.

He was married to Deborah Ann VanWinkle on December 17, 1837 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They were the parents of six children. Evi, Edward, Marcia, Aurelia, Louisa and Etta.
