George is supposed to be buried at Salisbury National Cemetery since he died as a POW at Salisbury Prison. One soldier from his regiment, John T. Welch, who had been a prisoner of war with him at Salisbury said that he had heard that George had joined the Confederate Army but a different soldier who had been a POW at Salisbury listed him among the dead and gave a message from George to Massachusetts authorities to relay to George's mother. There is no other credible evidence George survived besides Welch's statement. I suspect that Welch confused Bixby with another soldier in the 56th Mass. who was a POW at Salisbury and did join the Confederate Army, Dennis Mooney - Thanks to Bear on 11 Nov 2018
