Sergeant Andrew Kiefer (1755-1776), “...ancestor of the late Williams Township Keifers...”
was recorded as "...of Mt. Bethel...” when he joined the special militia company of Captain John Arndt in July 1776.
The company was raised in Easton the day after the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed there for the purpose of joining the Flying Camp. It was hastily recruited to face the impending British invasion of New York. On 27 Aug 1776, Sgt. Kiefer was killed in action in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Lieutenant Colonel Peter Kachline's battalion of the Flying Camp, of which Captain Arndt's Company served, suffered staggering casualties. Sergeant Andrew Kiefer and his unit were in the center of the battle lines facing British General Grant's 2,000 troops on the Gowanus Road. About 300 troops held the center of the Gowanus Pass.
When Sgt. Kiefer was killed, he left a five month old son, Andrew Jr. He was born 14 March 1776. Barbara Eckert Kiefer (d.1834), his widow, “... was probably a Williams Township Eckert,” who lived with relatives after 1776. Andrew Jr. was “reared in the township” according to the records of the Old Williams Church. He was “... repeatedly recorded as a communicate” in the 1780's and 1790's.A Revolutionary War patriot, Sgt. Keefer was among the killed, wounded, and missing after the battle of Long Island in New York on August 27, 1776.
