US Senator. She served in the United States Senate from the state of Alabama from June 8, 1978 to November 7, 1978. She studied journalism at the University of Alabama and later worked as both an insurance agent and a newspaper editor. She was working as a staff writer for the Birmingham News when she met then-Lieutenant Governor James Allen of Alabama. They were attracted to each other and married in August of 1964. She continued in journalism while her husband's political career went from being Lieutenant Governor of Alabama to being a member of the United States Senate. Her husband passed away in June of 1978 and she was appointed by Governor George Wallace to fill his seat. She decided to run for the special election to fill the remaining two years of her husband's term, but she lost in the Democratic primary to state Sen. Donald W. Stewart. She left the Senate after Stewart won the special election in November of 1978. After leaving the Senate, she worked as a columnist for the Washington Post before returning to Birmingham, Alabama. She later was both a public relations and advertising director for C.G. Sloan & Co., an antique and auction firm, and the owner of Maryon Allen Company, a restoration and design firm in Birmingham.
