Jim Windsor was born in Atco, GA on September 26, 1934 to Thomas Edward Windsor and Maggie Mae Johnston. Jim graduated with honors from Atco Grammar School where he was the speaker at graduation. He was an Eagle Scout, the youngest Eagle Scout to ever go on a trip to Canada, and was and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was the oldest of three brothers and the father of four boys. His brothers were Larry McClin Windsor, Deceased (Mary Ann Pruitt) and Thomas Edward Windsor (Emily Cagle). He was a member of the Atco Baptist Church, and was baptized around eight years of age, in Atco.

His sons are James Alfred Windsor, Jr. (Nancy E. Neenan), Stephen Lee Windsor (died at birth), Stephen Richard Windsor (Deborah Antenucci) and Philip Lee Windsor. He has two granddaughters, Julie Windsor Brooks and Sarah Windsor Willard, and two great granddaughters, Lexi Elizabeth Brooks and Ellie James Brooks. Jim is survived by: 3 nieces and 3 nephews, 3 great nieces and 1 nephew, and several great nieces and nephews.

Jim graduated from Cartersville High School, where he played football, and was co-Captain of the Purple Hurricanes. In his last high school game, he received his first concussion, and spent several days in the hospital.

After graduating from high school, Jim and a close friend joined the Air Force Reserves in Marietta, GA. He asked to leave in order to go to college (where he had been offered a football Scholarship at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. However, after breaking his ribs, he lost the scholarship, and began waiting tables and collecting laundry from the other students in order to put himself through college. He also joined the Air Force Reserves and the ROTC. When Jim was a senior in college, he met the love of his life, Amanda (Amy) Lee Windsor on a blind date. They dated from September 1955 to November 1956, when Jim was a Cadet Captain of "E" Company in ROTC. Amy and Jim became engaged in Aug of 1956 when Jim graduated from college. In the college year book, Jim asked Amy, 'Will you be my roommate next year.' Jim was Secretary of the "Track and Sabre Club'. Jim and Amy married on Nov 23, 1956 at the Hernando Baptist Church, Hernando, MS. On Nov 25, Amy returned to college to finish her 3 weeks and graduate, and Jim went to Ft. Benning, GA, to report for duty as a 2nd LT. After the 3 weeks, Amy joined Jim at Ft. Benning where he was attending the Basic Officer Leadership Course. On completion of BOLC, Jim went to Ranger School and successfully completed that training in Jun 15, 1957.  Jim and Amy travelled to MA to visit Amy's sister, Kay and her family. Jim left for a 15 month tour of duty in Korea in July 1957. During this time, Amy returned to her home town of Hernando, MS and lived with her great aunt until Jim returned.

By this time, Amy was expecting their first child that was born on November 6, 1957. Jim returned from his tour of duty in Nov 1958 and Jim and Amy returned to Ft. Benning, GA where Jim was an Instructor at the Infantry School. Their second boy was born and died on Feb 14, 1959.  On Nov 3, 1960, Amy, Jim and Jim Jr. flew to Stuttgard, Germany, on an old Prop Plane, and then took a train to their new home in New Ulm, Germany. While in Germany, two more boys were added to their family – one on Nov 3, 1961 and another on Nov 21, 1962.

In May, 1963, Jim, Amy and the boys flew back to the US via South Carolina on a jet. After visiting their parents, they returned to Ft. Benning, NC. Jim was an Instructor at the Infantry School, and while there, he graduated from Airborne School on Feb 11, 1965. In June 1966, Jim was sent to Viet Nam, and stationed with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, while Amy and the boys stayed in Columbia, SC.  He made the only combat jump in Viet Nam on February 22, 1967, following BG Deane out the door (but was injured upon landing). After being forced to go to the hospital, he flagged down a chopper and returned to command his unit. During this tour, Jim was sprayed with Agent Orange, and had a mortar blast land near him, giving him a bad concussion that sent him to the hospital for a few days. Jim returned from Vietnam in June 1967.

After visiting their parents, Jim was stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY for about 5 months with the 101st Airborne. Jim, Amy and the boys were then sent to Schofield Barracks, HA where Jim worked at Ft. Shafter, HA. In May 1969, Jim returned to Viet Nam where he was stationed as an Advisor to the Vietnamese for a year.

Jim was then stationed at the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, KS, until June 1971. Jim, Amy and the boys were then stationed at Columbia, SC where he commanded a Basic Training Infantry Battalion along with other jobs.

In Jun 1975, Jim was transferred to Northern VA at the Military Personnel Center in Arlington, VA. Eventually, Amy went to work for the Army at the Military Personnel Center and Jim was transferred to work in the Pentagon as Personnel Director of the National Guard. While there, Jim graduated from the Army War College, in Carlisle Barracks, PA in 1979. At Carlisle Barracks, he was promoted to Bird Colonel and Amy and BG Moore pin on his new rank.

Jim retired from the Army in June 1, 1986 and he and Amy moved to Texas. Jim and Amy settled in Lakewood Forest, in order to be closer to Jim Jr., Nancy, and the grandkids. Jim was active in the Lakewood Forest community, serving as president of the association for a number of years. Jim and Amy joined Lakewood UMC in 1994. Jim was very engaged with Lakewood UMC, served on various committees, operated a small café for Vacation Bible School, helped with the  Garage Sale and taught an adult Sunday school class for over 20 years as well as forming a Veterans Mens' group.
