Huachuca City — Benjamin Oree Barber was born and raised on a farm in Donalsonville Georgia on August 23, 1936 to Bonnie and Lilly Mae Barber.

He passed away on July 21, 2018.

Ben enlisted in the Air Force June 24, 1954 after graduating from Seminole County High School. After 14 dedicated years in the Air Force he applied for the Army Warrant Officer Program and in February 1968, as a Master Sergeant, he transferred to the Army. His first duty assignment was Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

In 1960 he met, and later married, the beautiful Ruth E. Whipp of Penn. They first came to the area in 1968-1971 on Ft. Huachuca. They returned in 1973 living in Huachuca City and in 1987 moved to the Presidential Estates area.

After retiring he worked as a Civil Servant and supported the Army for another 17 years, for a total of 37 years of federal service. He continued working as a substitute teacher, influencing the lives of hundreds of young adults for 15+ years.

Ben was also very active in the community serving on the Huachuca City Town Council, and on the Tombstone School Board for a total of 13 years with 12 of them as president. He was also one of the originators of the PBW fire district in his neighborhood and supported it until it fell under County control.

He graduated from Cochise College and the University of Arizona. Ben was a staunch believer in education and encouraged students to continue their education after High School.

Ben's priorities in life were God, family, education, and serving the community. He also loved hunting, fishing, and especially gardening, growing southern style vegetables. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and this community.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Arlie and Brett Barber, granddaughters, Tori Barber (Tennessee) and Heather Sheridan (Waddell, Arizona), and grandsons Court Arvisio (California), Dale Goolsby (Florida), Stephen DuBois (Colorado), and James Sather (Tucson), brothers, Johnny (Lillian) and Monroe (Faye) Barber, and sister Myrna County (Wallace deceased) of Georgia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother (Bonnie Croom), and sister (Ruth Minola Slavico).
