Fred S. Evans M.D. Captain (MC) US Navy, (ret.) passed away on Sunday. July 22, 2018.

He was born in Tupelo, MS on November 23, 1932, the only child of Ernest and Ruby Evans, both who predeceased him.

Dr. Evans graduated from Tupelo High School in 1950; Mississippi State University in 1955; and the University of Mississippi Medical School at Jackson, MS in 1957. He interned at the old Navy Hospital in Pensacola from 1957-1958 and attended Naval Flight Surgeons School at NAMI in 1958. He then was assigned as VMF-251's Flight Surgeon stationed at MCAS El Toro, CA. He made deployments to Atsugi, Japan and Cubi Point, Philippines. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at San Diego Naval Hospital in 1964, and was stationed at the Naval Hospital Pensacola and NAMI from 1964-1977. During this tour he served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and had the pleasure of instructing many student Naval Flight Surgeons. His last tour was at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology retiring in 1981. He returned to Pensacola and practiced ophthalmology at the West Florida Medical Center Clinic from 1981 to 2002.

Since retiring, he has served as a volunteer physician at Samaritan Hands Clinic at First Baptist Church and at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church ‘Our Lady of Angels Medical Clinic.’

He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and deacon emeritus. He enjoyed golfing, jogging and biking.

His wife of 55 years, Patricia Regan Evans died on May 9, 2017 and was buried at Barrancas National Cemetery.

He is survived by his two sons, John Evans, wife, Eden, and grandsons, Cameron and Tyler of York County, VA; and, Regan Evans, wife, Barbara, and granddaughter Riley, grandson, Cade of Wake Forest, N.C.

Visitation will be held on 10:00 am, July 26, 2018 at the Pleitz Chapel at First Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am. Burial services will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery immediately following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either of the following charities: Samaritan Hands Ministry at First Baptist Church of Pensacola, 500 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501 or St. Joseph Medical Clinic, 131 W Intendencia St., Pensacola, FL 32502.
