He married Maggie Wainwright in 1929. In 1945, he married Mary Kimel. He was a coal digger for 30 years, starting mining when he was 12, earning his own room at the age of 14.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, brothers Bernell, Wayne and Dale.
He is survived by daughter, Eva Ellis and husband Frank of Clarinda, IA; granddaughter Lori Perdew of Ames, IA; great granddaughters Allison and McKenzie Perdew, both of Ames, IA. Also brother Merl McKinley and wife Floris of Villisca; step-children Hallen Mattson, Doris Neiters and Mabel Mings, all of Grove, OK; and special friend Lorena Oltmanns of Villisca, IA.
