William O. Bolton Jr., 83, passed away on July 5, 2018. Bill was a life-long resident of St. Petersburg and it is with great sadness that his family announces his passing. He was born November 21, 1934 in St. Petersburg, Florida to Elizabeth Calarde Bolton "Betty" and William Oakley Bolton Sr. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and track, receiving All State Honors in football and track. Bill received a football scholarship to the University of Florida where he played all four years on both offense and defense, was Honorable mention All American, and played in the Blue-Grey football classic in Montgomery, AL in 1957. He had the opportunity to play professionally with the Chicago Cardinals, but decided not to due to a knee injury.

After graduating from UF Bill taught science at Madeira Beach Middle School, but later decided to attend dental school and received his DDS degree from the University of Tennessee. He practiced general dentistry in St. Petersburg for approximately 40 years and was affectionately known as "Doc" to his patients and friends.

Bill served on the board of the St. Petersburg YMCA and was a member for decades. He was religious about working out three times a week, weight training and Olympic lifting. He loved competing and became a world champion weightlifter accumulating over 40 world records for his age and weight class. Lacking competition, at times, he would often move down in age class and up in weight class. He was eventually inducted into the Masters Weightlifting Hall of Fame. Bill also enjoyed snow skiing and competing in track and field events, especially the discus. Not only was he talented in sports, he also played the clarinet and taught himself how to play the organ. You could hear him playing the organ throughout the neighborhood when his front door was open. His favorite was Guantanamera.

His quiet kind demeanor and easy-going personality will be greatly missed. Bill is survived by his daughter, Elaine Bolton Barber (Charles) of Osprey, FL; grandchildren, Allison Barber and Chip Barber; and siblings, Joanne Knight of Nashville, TN, Robert Bolton of Redington Beach, FL, Kathy Sue Brasington of Norfolk, VA. There will be a private family service, per his request. Donations in Bill's memory can be made to Tidewell Hospice, Philanthropy Department, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota FL 34238 (TidewellHospiceDonors.com) or to the American Cancer Society, 2970 University Parkway, Unit 104, Sarasota, FL 34243 (AmericanCancerSociety.com).

I first met Bill at the University of Florida. He was a senior on the Gator Football Team. He played Center and Linebacker. I was a freshman football player, playing guard on defense and for some reason, I can still recall him, along with the rest of the team, coming up to the line. The center was always the first to get to the line so everyone else could line up on him. One of those aligning was senior guard, Robert Vosloh, who died in Iowa Falls, Iowa on February 26, 2018. Bob was 82.
