Richard Dale Jurgens was born October 25, 1938 on the family farm near Bruce, SD to Fred and Elsie (Goodroad) Jurgens. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline, SD. Richard attended country grade school and graduated from Estelline High School in 1956. He then went to work for Peter J. Switzer.

In 1958 Richard met his dream come true, Darlene M. Adolphsen, from South Shore at a hamburger diner in Watertown. They were married on June 25, 1961 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Germantown Township.

Richard went to work in 1961 at the Castlewood Elevator. Richard was drafted in the United States Army in December of 1961. He had his basic training in January 1962 at Fort Carson, CO. He was a Military Police Officer in the 5th Infantry Division Mechanized. Later he was transferred to the 5th Army Military Police until he was honorably discharged on December 9, 1963 as SP4. Richard was very proud to have served his country during the Vietnam War.

He returned to work at the Castlewood Elevator and then worked as a manager at the Watertown Elevator. He later became part owner/manager of the Rauville Grain Elevator. Due to his ill health and Dr.’s advice, he sold the elevator and went to work at Fleet Wholesale/Sandvigs Country General as manager. He retired in 2015 from ICAP, 60+ Dining Program, where he prepared and delivered meals.

Richard and Darlene celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2018. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, hunting and fishing, car races and ball games. He also enjoyed listening to country music, dancing, playing cards and dice and putting puzzles together.

Richard is survived by his wife, Darlene; their children, Sheila Feyerisen of Castlewood, Sherman Jurgens of Watertown and Sherise (Shannon) Kauffman of Madison; his sister, Alice (Dave) Schulte of Hillpoint, WI; five grandchildren, Jordan Jackson, Hunter, Katrina and Kassi; and many nieces and nephews.
