WORCESTER - A beautiful soul has gone home to the Lord. On the feast of All Saints Day, November 1st 2017 Paul Vincent Mullaney was born to eternal life in St. Vincent Hospital in the presence of his family.
Family:
Paul was predeceased in 2014 by his loving wife, Sallie McDermott, to whom he was married for 62 years.
He was the loving father of nine children and adored grandfather of nineteen grandchildren. He is survived by his five daughters and four sons: Elizabeth Mullaney and her son Eamon Lightning of Worcester; Paul Mullaney of Worcester; Rev. Peter Mullaney of the Carthusian Order in Slovenia; Sara Mullaney, her husband Ned Mancini and their daughters Sara and Ruby of Worcester; Moira and Bill Shipsey and their children Dylan, Matthew, Jack and Sallie of Dublin, Ireland; Cait McCormack and her husband Kevin and their children Conor, Dermot and Cara of Worcester; Matthew Mullaney and his wife Christine and their children Hannah, Moira and Luke of Worcester; Mark Mullaney and his children Margaret, Grace and Paul of Worcester; Jude Mullaney and her husband Fergus Ryder and their children Ali, Liam, and Declan of Worcester.
Paul was predeceased by his two brothers, William (Bill) and Charles and his sister Katherine (Kay).
Life:
Born in Worcester on November 22, 1919, Paul was the son of William and Catherine (McQuade) Mullaney.
He attended Worcester public schools and graduated from South High School in 1938.
Paul graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1942, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following the war, he graduated from Boston College Law School with honors in 1948.
In 1950 he joined the Marine Reserves and was activated at the outset of the Korean War. A platoon commander, Paul saw action at the Chosin Reservoir, where he was seriously wounded and spent a year recuperating in the Chelsea Military Hospital.
When he returned to Worcester he practiced law with the firm of Ceaty, Ceaty, McCarthy & Donnelly.
In 1960 Paul was elected to the Worcester City Council and served until 1967, acting as Mayor from 1963-1965.
He was appointed a judge in the Dudley District Court by Governor Michael Dukakis in 1978 and served until his retirement from the court in 1991.
Active and interested in civil affairs he served as the first Chairperson of the Worcester Human Rights Commission. He was a grateful graduate of Holy Cross College and remained a engaged alumnus throughout his life, having attended his 75th college reunion in July 2017.
Paul was a proud and active veteran and he served as Honorary Chairman of the Korean War Memorial Committee. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Democratic Party in 2000 and was the humble and honored recipient of numerous awards arising from his civic, social and religious commitments.
He was the Grand Marshall of the Worcester St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1992.
In addition to Paul's dedication to his family and faith, he enjoyed a love of art, architecture, literature, history and travel. Unfailing in his kindness and generosity, he treated everyone he met with dignity and respect. His family will most miss his charming sense of humor, the mischief behind his twinkling blue eyes and his ever positive and gentle nature, although modest as he was, he may not have approved of all this fuss.
Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
