William is a son of Robert Christian Shimmin and Hannah Clucas - the last of their nine children. His parents met and married in England and then immigrated to the United States, arriving in Utah in 1857.
William married Elizabeth Bernetta Hickman July 4, 1888 in Manti, Utah. They became parents to five children: Ella Bernetta, William Vern, Frank Hichman, Alma Rex, and Emma Pearl. Only William Vern and Emma lived to adulthood.

The funeral services over the remains of William J Shimmin were conducted at Nephi last Sunday afternoon by the members of Eureka Camp No 451 Woodmen of the World of which order the deceased was a member.
