Martha M. Downey , (Age 91), Daughter of James Thomas and Hilda Gertrude (West) MacPherson died on June 28, 2018. Born and raised in Wellsburg, West Virginia, Martha graduated from West Liberty State College Business School and moved to Washington, DC to work for the US government. In 1951, she married Francis X. Downey. They had five children, Robert Downey, Joyce Hoover, John Downey, Mary K. Wetzel, and Joseph Downey. They resided in the Annandale area and were members of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Martha enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency. She was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Washington Redskins almost as much as she enjoyed watching her grandkids play sports. She was a loyal and loving friend. She was a wonderful mother and a proud grandmother to Taylor Downey, Philip Wetzel, and Madeline Downey. Martha was preceded in death by her son, Robert Downey and her older brother, James T. MacPherson III. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA on July 20, 2018 at 12 noon with a private interment following at Fairfax Memorial Park.
