Son of Jesse R. and Mary J. Carter Baggs. He married Mattie Summit on June 27, 1914 in Montgomery Co., Arkansas.

Baggs vs. Beggs: Richard's last name on the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 U. S. Federal Census records is listed as Baggs. It is also shown as Baggs on his 1914 marriage in Montgomery Co., Arkansas. His World War I and II Draft Registration Cards list his last name as Baggs, which is also the way he signed his name on those cards. Only on the 1940 U. S. Federal Census is his last name shown as Beggs.

It is possible he decided to change the spelling of his last name from Baggs to Beggs somewhere around 1940 or so and went by that from then on. That would explain why his and Mattie's monument has the Beggs name on it. Sometimes monuments do have a name spelled incorrectly but in this case I'm confident it is as it was intended to be.
