Roy H. "Buzz" Patterson passed away Monday, July 9, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston following an extended illness. He was born June 22, 1931, in Frame and spent his adult life in Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Donna May Legg Patterson, and his mother and father, Genevieve and Roy Patterson.

Survivors include his three dear daughters, Cynthia Lewis (Bill) of Princeton, Cathy Snodgrass of Charleston, and Carrie Adkins (Ray) of Huntington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great - grandchildren, Elizabeth Lallathin (Robert) and their children, Riley and William of Wilmington, NC; Joseph Lewis (BreAnna) and their daughter Teagan of Wake Forest, NC; Casey Snodgrass of Rockledge, FL; Conner Snodgrass (Anna Majestro) of Charlotte, NC; Corey Snodgrass of Charleston; Brian Adkins (Amanda) and their son Benjamin of Nashville, TN; and Eden Mays (Daniel) and their son Ellis of Lebanon, OH. He also leaves behind his sisters, Joyce Stevens (Jim, deceased) and Jeanne Wood, along with several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and close neighbors and friends.

Roy retired in 1986 from Union Carbide where he served as a supervisor. Though he only had a high school education, he was a man of exceptional intelligence and determination, and he was very proud of all that he accomplished in his life. He enjoyed woodworking and was an excellent carpenter, building his own home and assisting in many household projects for his children through the years, as well as crafting numerous pieces of beautiful furniture and turning countless treasures on his lathe. He enjoyed maintaining his lawn, made faithful trips to the gym, and loved listening to country music and watching old Westerns. He looked forward to regular visits from his family, friends, and neighbors. He always greeted everyone with a strong handshake, accompanied by one of his signature one-liners, and looked them straight in the eye. We will remember him most vividly sitting in the kitchen, either at the bar or around the table for Sunday dinner or a game of Spades. He expected a great deal from his loved ones, but he gave so much in return. He will be dearly missed.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Hubbard Hospice House for the care and comfort they provided for Roy and all of his visitors in the final stage of his life, and Cheryl Richardson for the time she spent caring for him preceding his illness. They would also like to thank the CAMC General Division Staff, Emergency Department, Respiratory Therapy Department, and NICU nurses and staff, particularly Dr. Jagadeesh Yella, for their care and support.

Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home in Charleston for visitation, with a memorial service beginning at noon, and a dedication to follow in the columbarium at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, where he and his wife's ashes will be interred.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.
