Maurie was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 7, 1926, the son of Charles R. and Louise Elizabeth Clark Reed. He married Donna J. Meadema on June 14, 1952, at Park Congregational Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a radioman aboard a troop transport ship.

Maurie graduated from Creston High School, Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1944. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Albion College, Albion, Michigan, in 1950, and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He received a Master of Science Degree from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan in 1952, and loved to cheer for the Michigan State University Spartans.

He began his career as a research microbiologist with Grain Processing Corporation in 1952. In 1963, he joined Kent Feeds as a Sales Administrator and Regional Sales Manager and served in that capacity until 1974, when he became Vice President of Marketing for Americana Seeds. He served as President and CEO of Americana Seeds from 1977-1984. He then returned to Kent Feeds and was Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing from 1984-1991, retiring in 1991, after 39 years with the same company.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Donna, of Muscatine; two daughters, Nancy E. Hultquist and her husband Douglas, of Rock Island, Illinois, Caroline K. Martin and her husband, Daniel, of New Milford, Connecticut; one son Jeffrey C. Reed and his wife, Cheryl of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Sarah and Amy Hultquist, Jacob Reed and Hannah, Rebecca and Elizabeth Martin; two brothers, Robert M. Reed of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Lawrence L. Reed and his wife Mary Ellen of Sunnyvale, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Charles R. Reed.
