Joe was a decorated veteran of the Korean War. Using the GI Bill he earned a BA degree from SIU. He taught at Hixon Junior High School in Webster Groves, Mo from 1957 to 1967, when he switched to retail sales in electronics. During his 40 years in Shawnee he served as the Director of Old Shawnee Town and the Director of the Shawnee Chamber Of Commerce. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Shawnee Historical Society, Shawnee Lions Club, and VFW.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife JoAnn, his eldest son, Daniel Edward Mayo, brothers Ivan Wells, Gerald Lee, and Loren Ray Mayo, half-brother Harold Williamson, step-brothers Richard and Robert Williamson, and step-sister Gladys (Williamson) Pearce. Surviving him are his son Michael Alan Mayo and wife Megan, daughter Deborah Susan Dooley and husband Jack.
