Mary Beth Crowley Broderick passed away on July 17, 2018, at the North Idaho Hospice Schneidmiller House, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after an 11-month, courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.

Mary Beth was born at the old Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Portland on July 31, 1942, to Marj and Bob Crowley. They lived in Rockford, Wash., for her first seven years while her father operated the family farm during World War II. The family then moved to Spokane, Wash., for several years before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1954.

For many years Mary Beth was a camper and counselor at Camp Fire Girls Camp Neewahlu. A 1960 graduate of Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy, she had been editor of the school newspaper and of the yearbook. Then she went on to Marylhurst College in Lake Oswego, Ore., where she also was editor of the school newspaper and yearbook.

In 1963, Mary Beth married John “Jay” Broderick in Coeur d’Alene. They lived in many communities before returning to Coeur d’Alene in 2014, although they had a cabin in Cave Bay on Coeur d’Alene Lake since 1992.

Mary Beth felt the highest calling is to be a homemaker, and she made a wonderful home. Managing our home beautifully, she was an excellent cook, child-raiser, gardener and entertainer, and she was an excellent seamstress and quilter. Our first major purchase was a sewing machine. Each time Mary Beth moved to a new community she easily made new friends and found great volunteer opportunities.

Mary Beth was in real estate for several years, as a Realtor and office worker.

She had lots of fun tent-camping all over the Pacific Northwest with our Dodge Maxivan. For several years she was on the crew of our small sailboat, even using the trapeze to keep the boat from capsizing on San Francisco Bay.

Mary Beth had a strong drive to help others. A major effort was managing the Charity Quilt efforts for the Northwest Quilters Guild, Portland, Ore. She organized the materials and scheduled the quilt making. For about 13 years she personally distributed about 2,400 quilts annually to organizations providing support for the disadvantaged. After moving to Coeur d’Alene, she made CASA pillow cases and kits for Days for Girls. Also, she became a member of North Idaho Quilters and of PEO Chapter CL.

Mary Beth loved travel, taking four trips to Ireland. A timeshare condo on Maui was a great joy to her. The Cave Bay Cabin was a special joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Michael Crowley.

She is survived by husband, John Broderick; children, Patricia Jean (Jim) Arnold and David Robert (Kelli) Broderick; three grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, James and Vicki Crowley; sister-in-law, Sissy Crowley and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, consider giving a memorial donation to Hospice of North Idaho.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday July 20, 2018, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 E. Indiana Ave., Coeur d’Alene, with burial to follow at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. English Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with Mary Beth’s care and arrangements
