Henry Gloudemans Started Concern Over 50 Years Ago
Henry A. Gloudemans, founder of the present Gloudemans Department Store in Appleton, died suddenly in his home in Appleton Tuesday. Gloudemans, 87, lived at 315 S. Walnut St.
He retired from active management of the department store at 430 W. College Ave. in 1938 with his co-founder, Roscoe T. Gage, 420 W. Fifth St., Appleton.
The store he and Gage founded in 1911 was the first major commercial development on the west end of College Avenue. The store celebrated its 50th anniversary in October, 1961.
Came From Chilton
Gloudemans came to Appleton from Chilton, where they had operated a store .They bought a building on the avenue and started their business, Gloudemans-Gage Co.
They made major additions to the store building in 1913 and 1916. When they retired, Gloudemans' son, Raymond J. Gloudemans, took over management. The names of the company which operates the store was later changed to Gloudemans Co., Inc.
The last major addition to the store came in 1958, when the company bought and razed the John Schomisch barber shop adjacent to the store and put on and addition.
Gloudemans was a former director of Outagamie County Bank and Appleton Building & Loan Association.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Appleton Elks Club. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church and was active in the Holy Name Society.
Survivors are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Lee Fischer and Mrs. James Hobbins, both of Appleton, and Mrs. T.J. Merkel, Reedsburg; four sons, Andrew, route 1, Menasha, and Raymond, Albert and Norbert, all of Appleton; 22 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Appleton. Friends may call at Brettschneider Funeral Home, Appleton, after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery."
