He attended college at University of Memphis. Popular Memphis disc jockey Preston Moore was killed and his wife seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a car in Tunica County, officials said Sunday.
Moore, 62, in his on-air personality Jaye Michael Davis, was a longtime deejay at WDIA-AM 1070 and hosted an afternoon show of oldies and rhythm and blues music. Moore was also a Shelby County Sheriff's deputy since 1994 and served in the fugitive division on the midnight shift, sheriff's department spokesman Steve Shular said. He lived in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis. "It's a tremendous loss," said colleague and longtime friend Mel DeBerry, who has a late night show at WDIA. "He was a great guy, a great spirit... always cracking jokes," DeBerry said. Moore had worked at the historic radio station at least 29 years, DeBerry said. "He was always willing to help out in different situations," he said. Moore was driving his 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle south on U.S. 61 just after 9 p.m. Saturday when the collision occurred, Mississippi Highway Patrol Staff Sgt. Scott Swanson said. Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife Lisa, 40, who was riding on the cycle, was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis by helicopter in critical condition. Moore was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, Swanson said. A 2003 Dodge station wagon driven by Evene Pratcher, 65, of Crenshaw, Miss., was turning left from Casino Strip Boulevard and collided with Moore's motorcycle in the intersection. Pratcher and a passenger, Alfrida Partee, 58, of Senatobia, Miss., were taken to Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in non-critical condition. The investigation into what caused the crash was continuing Sunday, Swanson said, and no tickets had been issued. There is a traffic light at the intersection, he said.
