Margie was born January 31, 1927 in Parsons, KS to Gladys Faye (Beasley) and Elliot Wayne Dean, and attended school in Parsons, KS.
On August 11, 1962, she was united in marriage to Richard Paul Murphy, Sr. in Miami, OK. In 1966, they moved from Topeka, KS to their farm south of Overbrook, KS.
Margie worked as a corporate bookkeeper for Ford Motor Company and Sears in Parsons, KS. She also owned and operated Marge’s Country Place in Topeka, where she taught oil and acrylic painting classes. She also created and displayed beautiful silk flower arrangements.
She loved to display her paintings, so she maintained a booth at Topeka’s Cider Days for several years and became popular in the craft fair circuit.
Some of Margie’s favorite activities included spending many hours canning and freezing homegrown produce from her garden, making homemade rolls for family gatherings, and receiving praise for her famous cherry cheesecake from her private collection of old recipes. She also loved to dance and she and Richard could “clear the dance floor.”
She loved to entertain and was actively involved in the Overbrook Extension Homemakers Unit.
Margie’s other talents included refinishing her collection of antique furniture and cane-backed chairs. As a diversion from her “chief cook and bottle washer” duties, she spent time reading James Patterson’s mystery novels and Nora Roberts’ romance novels. They were always accompanied by an afternoon coke and a piece of cake. Margie collected quilt fabric for many years, and loved creating advanced quilt patterns. She had every color and design imaginable stored in the cabinets made especially for her collection.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard P. Murphy, Sr.; two brothers, Carl and Kenneth Dean; and daughter, Vickie (Campbell) Davisson and son-in-law Dan Thompson.
Survivors include three sons, John Campbell, Jr. and his wife Donna, of Topeka, KS, Richard P. Murphy Jr. of Topeka, KS, and Robin Murphy of Overbrook, KS; daughter, Kim (Murphy) Thompson of Plano, TX; brother Darold Dean of Oswego, KS; sister, Maxine Pinnell of Clifton, KS; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
