Henry William “Hank” Friend, 85, passed away after a brief illness in the early hours of Monday morning, July 16, 2018 in Brookings, Oregon. He returned to his Father in Heaven and now reunited with his lovely wife of 63 years, who passed last year, Francie and Baby Hank; and heaps of other family members.

Henry was born on August 28, 1932 in San Bernardino, California to Wilbur Levie and Fern Ilea (McDowell) Friend. He was one of eleven children, and the last of his generation in this Friend Family but he left a legacy behind of his own. He was raise in Yucaipa, California and lived in San Bernardino County for most of his life until he semi-retired to Hayfork, and then fully retired in Brookings, Oregon.

Henry married Ruth Alberta Orndorff in October 1955 and began a blended family with his loving wife who brought into this marriage five children: Frances, Wanda, Georgina, George, and Frank. Then a year after their marriage they suffer the loss of Baby Hank due to full-term still birth, and then following that he and Bert added four more children: Charles, Matthew, Terrill and Kandee.

Henry had been a lifetime carpenter and handy man. Given his strength to his trade, his utmost creative woodworking skills, home constructions and renovations had been left behind for others to appreciate. He was a veteran of the Korean War conflict under the U.S. National Guard. He served in Japan in the later part of this conflict as a truck driver moving soldiers and supplies near the borders facing Korea.

Henry served his family and God with all his heart and dedication. He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint in 1961, and served many positions, namely these few, Scoutmaster and Asst Scoutmaster, Elder Quorum Presidency and Branch President of the Hayfork Branch in Hayfork, California.

Preceded him in death was his wife Bert, daughter Francie Rucker and Baby Hank; and his older brother Levi Friend, who passed in 2015 in Weaverville, California.

Survivors included Wanda Hale of Newport News, Virginia, Gina Virgo of Las Vegas, Nevada, George Virgo of Marinette, Wisconsin, Frank Hays of Brookings, Oregon, Charles W. Friend of Pierson, Michigan, Matthew D. Friend of Russellville, Arkansas, Terrill M. Friend of Lebanon, Oregon and Kandee Friend of Chico, California; 32 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held at a future date for both Hank and Bert at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, California.

The Neptune Society will oversee his crematory arrangement.
