Wilhelm was born in Willegassen, Westphalia, Prussia (modern-day Germany) to Bernard Heinrich Bode and Elizabeth Schauf. He immigrated to the United States in 1860.

Wilhelm was married to Anna Katharina Winkelmann on Nov. 26, 1861, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, Missouri, and they had nine children.

Wilhelm's cousin Margaretha was also married to Katharina's brother Gerhard.
