Joseph Atherton Richards used "Atherton" as his first name as an adult.

A newspaper article in May 2000 stated, "Richards was born on the Kamehameha campus Sept. 29, 1984, the eldest son of the principal, Theodore Richards."

His obituary states [Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 02 Mar 1974, Honolulu, Hawaii, page 15]:
"He said in his will: 'I direct that I be cremated at that my ashes be blown to the winds at sundown from the crest of Puu Aiea, Kahua Ranch, without any accompanying ceremony'."

First marriage was to MARSHA (nee Brown) DAVENPORT in New York City on Aug. 14, 1922. Divorced on Jan. 29, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Second marriage was to MRS. HELEN HUGHES DULANY on Jan. 22 1938 in Pasadena, California. Divorced on Jan. 26, 1956 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
