Russell P. Mathis Jr., of Wellsboro, died on Friday, July 13, 2018, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro. He was the son of the late Russell P. and Almira C. (Hickman) Mathis. Russell married the former Jean Adams on Sept. 5, 1987, who survives, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Crescenzo) Mathis, on Aug. 21, 1986.
Russell was a graduate of Atlantic City High School, Class of 1944, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Rider College, N.J., in 1952. He retired from Taynton Freight, Wellsboro, in 1987 as the vice president of finance after more than 20 years of service.
Russell was U.S. Army veteran serving from 1946 to 1948 with the 88th Division in Italy.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wellsboro, and served as a church elder. Russell also was a long-time member of the Transport Investment Club, a member of the Wellsboro American Legion, Post 84 and the Tyoga Country Club where he was a past president and a long-time golfer.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Jean, are his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Jeffery Dougherty; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Elizabeth, Russell was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Joseph Meier, a nephew and his wife, Joseph and Patty Meier; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Robert Chalfant.
Burial: Wellsboro Cemetery.
