Blanche L. Ledford, 98, of Hayesville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Blanche was a native of Towns County, Ga., but had lived most of her life in Clay County.

Despite hard times during the Great Depression, Blanche and her family always found something to be thankful for even if it was small by today's standards. She and her siblings attended Ogden School. They lived in Trout Cove and walked to school. She had many fond memories of attending this little school. They played softball during recess and loved square dancing when the John C. Campbell Folk School gave programs at the Ogden School.

Blanche's brother played matchmaker and introduced her to his Civilian Conservation Corps buddy, Rondy Ledford. The couple fell in love and were married by a justice of the peace in 1938. Rondy was called to preach in 1953, and together they helped to build Pine Grove Baptist Church. For 40 years, they pastored many churches in Clay County. Blanche and Rondy also did missionary work and held prayer meetings in homes.

Blanche recorded her life experiences through writing. Her work appeared in Good Old Days Magazine, Carolina Country and many Old Mountain Press anthologies. She won the Paul Green Multimedia Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians in 2012 for her book Planting by the Signs.

Blanche also expressed her creativity through quilting, cooking, jelly making and master gardening. She shared her baked goods, preserves, fresh vegetables and words of encouragement with friends and needy people.

Blanche was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was the daughter of the late John and Trecie Shook Lee and wife of the late James Ronda "Rondy" Ledford, who died Nov. 24, 1988. She is also preceded in death by her infant son, Ronnie Ledford; four sisters, Oma Morgan, Mary Lou Auberry, Hubbie Nelson and Helen Lawhorn; and two brothers, George Lee and Frank Lee.

Surviving are her children, Barbara Wright and husband, Randy, of Shelby, N.C., Harold Ledford and wife, Donna, of Hayesville, and Brenda Kay Ledford, of Hayesville; four grandchildren, Alicia Baugh and husband, Dr. Michael, of Gainesville, Ga., Dr. Jenny Brame and husband, Robert, of Durham, N.C., Rev. John Wright and wife, Leslie, of Shelby; and Mark Harold Ledford Jr., of Hayesville; four great-grandchildren, Reagan Blanche Wright, Lucy Claire Baugh, Marshall Brame and Chandler Brame; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18 at Laurel Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Special music was provided by Diane and Bobby Palmer sang "At the River" and "Beulah Land". Pallbearers were from the George Lee American Legion: Dwight McClure, Joe Buckner, Joey Buckner, Mitchell Shields, Tommy Hooper and Phil Cantley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in honor of Blanche L. Ledford to Gideons International, P.O. Box 164, Murphy, N.C. 28906.
