John Wofford was born on February 8, 1926, the son of Quince and Edna Wofford on a family farm near Mantee, Mississippi. He was one of six siblings that survived to adulthood. While growing up on the farm he developed a love for the land that stayed with him all his life.
Along with two of his brothers (Fred and Simpson), he served his country as a member of the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific theatre. He served the country again as a member of the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. While he was in the Air Force he met the love of his life and made Helen Leavell his wife. They settled down in Memphis, Tennessee and raised three children.
He joined the Postal Service and worked there until his retirement in 1981. Upon his retirement, he returned to his love of farming and bought a small farm outside of Hernando. His spent the next 36 years on that farm, selling his produce at local farmer’s markets and watching his six grandkids grow. For the last year he and his wife lived in Wesley Meadows Retirement community in Hernando.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Quince and Edna Wofford, and his siblings, Ira McCoy Wofford, Fred Wofford, Simpson Wofford, Homer Francis Bradley and Arlita Buckingham. There will be a graveyard service at the Mount Pleasant cemetery near Mantee where John will be laid to rest in the land he loved. This service will be held on Monday, July 9 at 10:30. Houston Funeral Home will be in charge of all the arrangements.
