Inventor, Aviation Pioneer. Sir Frank Whittle, K.B.E., C.B., was the inventor and pioneer of the jet engine. The first jet propelled aircraft using the Whittle engine flew in May 1941. Whittle's role in WWII was also of great significance. His work at Rolls-Royce in the city of Derby, where his ever better engines where being used in the famous Spitfire fighters, were vital to Britain's war effort. In later life Whittle emigrated to the U.S.A., where he lectured at University.
