Great Husband and Father Will Be Missed

John Glenn Starkey

John was born March 12, 1925 and died July 4, 2018.. He was born in Los Angeles CA to parents Ivile and Helen Starkey and was the oldest of three brothers Robert (deceased) and Richard. The family moved to the Eugene, OR area where he spent most of his childhood. At the age of 17, John joined the U.S.Navy during WW2 and served as a radioman in the South Pacific. After the war he came to Portland where he met and married Bernice Savely. The two raised, showed and judged AKC German Shepherds. Their home was always filled with litters of puppies along with Champion show dogs. They later had three children, Philip, Rebecca and Claudia. John and Bernice passed on their love of animals, outdoor adventures and camping to their children. Summers they would often toss a quarter to see what direction they should travel for their family vacations. Bernice passed away in September of 1980.

In 1982 John met Harriet Smith while they were both working as bus drivers for Beaverton School Dist. Harriet’s joy of life caught John’s heart and they were married in 1983. He and Harriet spent a lot of time living life with their family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and camping. John and Harriet were always ready for an adventure. Harriet died of cancer in March of 2018. They were married 35 years.

John worked most of his career in the optical field including some years at GAF heading up their precision optics department. He also owned a janitorial business for a number of years. John was a guy who had many interest. Wood working, flower arrangements- he made all the flower arrangements for his daughter’s wedding and gardening. He coached baseball, was a Boy Scout leader and was president of the PTA. He was an active Dad and always someone you could count on. He always had a story to tell about growing up and was proud of his service with the US Navy

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Richard and Ora Starkey, three children: Phil Starkey and daughter-in-law Debbie Starkey, Rebecca Ching and son-in-law Michael Ching, Claudia Starkey. He also had five step-children; Diane Yarborough and son-in-law Frank Yarborough, Cindy Smith, Linda Garrison and son-in-law Joe Garrison, Cathy Rosengreen, and Vince Smith and daughter-in-law Steffani Smith; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. John is also survived by his brother Richard Starkey.

There will be a family interment to be held July 21, 2018 at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be given to the American Diabetes Foundation in John’s name.
