Joseph is the eleventh of thirteen children born to Edward Gledhill and Betty Hague. The family became converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while still in England. In 1868 the parents with their younger children boarded the ship "Emerald Isle" and sailed for America. They crossed the United States to Utah in Edward T Mumford Company arriving in Salt Lake City on September 24, 1868.

On the 1870 Census Joseph was living with his sister, Violet Snow in Springville, Utah. He was 18 years old. Ten years later he was married to Martha Rebecca Acord. They and their three year-old daughter were living in Glenwood, Sevier, Utah. In 1900 Joseph and his family were living in Aurora, Sevier, Utah. The family had grown. Elizabeth was married and on her own. There were five other children: Joseph, May, Hazel, Florence, and Lela, ranging in age from 19 down to 2 years old. Additionally they had lost two children: Homer and Cyrus.

In 1910 the family was in Vermillion. Two more children had been added to the family: Levan and Zelpha. In 1920 Joseph and Martha were living in Sigurd with their two youngest children. After that, with their children raised and on their own, Joseph and Martha moved to San Diego, California. Their oldest son, Joseph, was in California and the two youngest children went with them. The other children were still in Utah and some went to California later.
