Roman Catholic Cardinal, well known and respected for his work in the interreligious dialogue. Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber for the Holy Roman Church, he announced the election of Pope Francis to the world in 2013. He was ordained a priest in 1969 in his native France, and appointed Archbishop of Thelepte by Pope St. John Paul II in 1991. He was assigned to the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See , and in 2003 he was elevated to Cardinal-Deacon of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare alle Terma Neroniane-Alessandrine in Rome. He then served as Vatican Archivist and Librarian. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, which he undertook as a mission of peace and understanding. Afflicted in his later years with Parkinson's Disease, he died while being treated in the United States. Pope Francis attended his Funeral Mass, along with with many representatives of various world religions, at St. Peter's Basilica, before his interment in the Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Rome.
