John is the son of Hannah and John J. Ostler, Sr. John was married twice.

John first married Susannah Jennings, Oct. 17, 1819 in Coshocton Co., OH. They had at least 5 children: William, Mary, Dorothy, Benjamin and Lucretia. Susannah divorced John for adultry in Sept. of 1834 (She later married a man with the surname of Page).

John's second wife was Lavina Ostler. They married Oct. 9, 1834 in Coshocton Co., OH. John and Lavina had at least 10 children together: Elizabeth, Jacob, Sarah Ann, Samuel Isaac, Jesse Clark, Hannah, Amanda, Eliza, and Indiana.

John and Lavina migrated from Ohio to Indiana after the birth of their 2nd child. John was a Cooper (barrel maker) and a farmer. John died after Lavina. When he passed away he still had 4 minor children (Mariah, Amanda, Eliza and Indiana). Leander McClurg was appointed guardian of these 4 minor children. John owned 40 acres of land in Michigantown which was sold off at his death to pay the bills & expenses.
