* On 9 May 1883 he was issued the Publican's License of the Rolleston Hotel, containing twelve rooms, inclusive of those required for the family.
* In May 1884 the hotel was again in financial trouble and he was bankrupt. At the Creditors Hearing James said that part of the money which he paid for the stock when he first took the hotel was his wife's money, which she held in her own right, from her first husband.
