KING , Louise Bennett: 10/10/1916 - 7/28/2017

Louise Bennett King , a long-time resident of Decatur, GA, passed away 7/28/17 in a nursing facility in Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise Ward Bennett and James T. Bennett of Ft. Gaines, GA; three brothers: Ward, James and Robert Bennett; and her husband of almost 68 years, Ralph H. King of Decatur Ga. She is survived by one brother, Benjamin Bennett, of Melbourn, FL; her dear friend, Virginia Patterson of Decatur, GA; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

Mrs. King was an active member of Decatur Presbyterian Church for over 60 years serving in many capacities until her health slowed her participation. Mrs. King was a passionate bridge player from the age of twelve; and was a formidable opponent. She loved flowers, chocolate, wearing pretty clothes, travel, socializing with her friends, telling stories about her family, and eating out.

However, next to her husband, her truest passion was teaching. Until the very end of her life, she would tell anyone who asked that she loved every single day of her teaching career. Although Mrs. King had no children of her own, she touched the lives of hundreds of students and she treasured each one. She taught for nearly forty years with the bulk of her career being spent as an English teacher at Laurel Ridge Elementary School in Decatur. She was "that" teacher; the one everyone remembers. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a founding member, and president of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Her's was a long and full life, well lived; and those who knew and loved her were lucky indeed.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Decatur Presbyterian Church, or the charity of your choice, or that you donate supplies to a classroom teacher of your choosing. The family would like to express their heart-felt appreciation to the staffs of Hospice Atlanta; Aspire Physical Recovery Center at Cahaba River in Birmingham, and Comfort Care Hospice of Pelham. You all became family and your love and concern will never be forgotten. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 1st at 10:00 am in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Rd, Decatur, GA. Interment will follow at Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends the hour prior to the service.
