Joseph B. BREWER Biography
Provided by: Patrick Gorman

Joseph B. Brewer was born December 3, 1839 in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jonas and Eunice (Smith) Brewer. At some point after the birth of his sister Saphronia on April 2, 1843, (in Massachusetts) the family ventured west to Illinois, settling in DuPage County. On January 11, 1847 his mother Eunice passed away, and Jonas then married Jemima Richards on March 29 in DuPage County, Illinois. By 1860, at 20 years of age, Joseph and his sister Saphronia, had left his family in DuPage County and had moved to Bradford Township in Lee County, Illinois. He was working on the farm of Ira Brewer, (coincidence no relation) and there he met his future wife Louisa Brewer, who was six years his junior. Shortly after the completion of the first year of the Civil War Joseph enlisted with the 34th IL Infantry on August 26, 1861. He was mustered as a Private with Co. "D" on September 7, 1861 for a term of 3 years of service. He was discharged on January 7, 1862 for unknown reasons. The 34th was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered in September 7, 1861. Moved to Lexington, Kentucky, October 2, 1861, thence to Louisville and Camp Nevins, Kentucky, and duty there till February, 1862. During his time of service Joseph saw no action on the field of battle. Shortly after his return to Bradford Township he was married to Louisa Brewer (Lee County Marriage Records Book "A" Pg. #308). By 1868 his daughter Cora was born and in 1879 a son Robert was also born. On May 23, 1885 an "Invalids Pension Application" was filed for Joseph. Perhaps a a war injury or illness plagued him. BUT from here it gets tricky, it should be noted that on the pension application index card it was stated that Joseph served with both the 34th IL. Co. "D" and the 75thIL.l Co. "E". No service records were found to indicate he served in the 75th. It is a possible error. Sadly at age 51 Joseph passed away on May 25, 1891 in Bradford Township, Lee County, Illinois. It was noted in the Dixon Telegraph on June 3, 1891 with only a one sentence note of his death. A full obituary is being sought by the research Department of LCHGS in Dixon. Further oddities should be noted as well, in the one sentence note in the Telegraph it stated that he was buried in Lee Center Cemetery. On October 30, 1896 a Memorial Marker for Joseph was ordered from the VA from W.H. Cross of Lee, Massachusetts. BUT here in lies the problem, Joseph was actually buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon, Illinois in Plot # H/001692. He rests in peace next to his beloved wife Louisa who herself passed away on February 2, 1917. There is no internment dated listed in the records for Joseph but if indeed he was buried in Lee Center his remains must have been moved at some point before the death of his wife, who also died in Lee Center. Her death record indicates her place of burial as Oakwood in Dixon.
