MELVIN CONRAD SCHARP, 86, died May 23, 2006, surrounded by his fmaily. He was born March 18, 1920 in Danforth, to CONRAD AUGUST & GRACE ELNORA JOHNSON SCHARP.

He married COY NIELSEN from Hyrum, Utah, on Nov. 11, 1941, before being shipped to the Pacific theater. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons: ROGER (GAY) SCHARP, & DAVID (DARLINE) SCHARP, Layton, Utah; four daughters: AUDENE (TOM) FRENCH, No. Ogen, Utah, CAROL (ROBERT) ALLINSON, Cedar City, Utah, VALERIE WEAVER, Sunset, Utah, and VICKIE (DALE) CARTER, Aurora, Colorado; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two brothers: RICHARD (DONA) SCHARP, Farmington, Utah, & GLEN (GWEN) SCHARP, Lubbock, Texas; and one sister: IRMAJEAN MENDOZA, Riverside, California.

Melvin was raised on a farm. He attended a one-room school the first four years of his elementary education. He later graduated from Gilman High School where he lettered in basketball and track. He played the clarinet in the high school band and the Danforth community Band.

He left Pearl Harbor one week before the attack. During his tour of duty he completed 225 flying missions, survived two crashes and was awarded the distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal, each with two clusters as well as three Presidential citations. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served two years at Goose Bay, Labrador and Thule, Greenland. In 1985 he retired from Civil Service with 40 years of distinguished service.
