Anthony G. Penale was born on September 4, 1915 in Niagara Falls, New York, the oldest son of Raffaele and Francesca (Gallo) Penale. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1932 and later attended Middlebury College, the University of Chicago and Columbia. He taught English at the City College of New York in the 1960s. He died on March 20, 1996 of carbon monoxide poisoning from a house fire.
He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Army Specialized Training Program. Later, he was married to a time to the former Evangeline Galanopulo.
