On December 20, 1943, Lt. Farrah, a bombardier - navigator of the US Army Air Corps 427th Bomb Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group, received injuries during a bombing mission over Bremen, Germany. He parachuted from his crippled B-17 and was captured. Lt. Farrah, was imprisoned with other Allied officers at Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany until being liberated by units of the Russian Army. While a prisoner of the German Army, he memorialized his experiences in diary entitled "A War Time Log". A recipient of the Purple Heart, he was retired as a Captain and returned to Lawrence and rejoined his father, Louis J. Farrah, as a funeral director at L. J. Farrah and Son Funeral Home.
