James N McKinley, son of John D. and Mary Sullender McKinley, was born about 1795 in Kentucky. His father fought with George Rogers Clark, coming from Virginia through Pennsylvania, and settling in Kentucky, most likely near Louisville. His mother emigrated from Ireland, marrying his father in Indiana. His family were among the first settlers of Louisville, and later, Clark County, Indiana, living by 1820 in Wood Township, near present-day Borden, Indiana. James married Mary Ann Wood on August 16, 1820, in Wood Township, Clark County, Indiana. In 1822, he received a land grant in Morgan County, Indiana, and moved his family there. They had eight children in 23 years. His wife died in 1845. James died in 1849, in Morgan County, at the age of 54, and is buried near his wife in Borden, Indiana.
