Thomas Garcia, 76, of Lakeside, passed away July 2, 2018, after a brief illness. He was, like the Cheech and Chong song, "Born in East L.A." on March 11, 1942, to the late Mary and Leo Garcia. He grew up in the Lincoln Heights area of Los Angeles, in the same house, for the first 30 years of his life. Along the way, he attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Cathedral High School (Class of 1961) and East Los Angeles College. While in high school he met Patricia Hofman, they dated and later married. But first, the Army called. He served two years and married Patricia in the middle of his service. He honorably discharged just seven weeks before the birth of their first son and they moved from South Carolina, where he been stationed, back to the house in East L.A. A year later, another son was born, and the family was complete. Tom worked in the wholesale liquor industry for a couple of different companies, first in Los Angeles (McKesson Wine & Spirits) and then in San Diego (Southern Wine & Spirits), where he got a job in 1978. The decision to move was easy because Pat's parents and other family members lived in the area. He later worked for a wholesaler to the military (S&K Sales Co.) and retired from that company. Once retired he got to spend more time doing the things he loved: traveling, spending time with his family and riding trains. He and Pat (and sometimes grandchildren) drove across the country more than once, visiting various family members along the way, and riding trains when he came across them. He had been active in Catholic Church, having co-taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine with Pat, and serving as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lakeside. He was a regular at daily mass and even had the keys to open the church. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Pat; his son John (Laura), of Reseda; his son Mark (Sheila), of Olathe, Kansas; his grandsons Tim Garcia, Drew Garcia and Hunter Trammell (Ceri); his granddaughters Lexi Garcia, Grace Trammell, Angelina Garcia and Monica Garcia; and great-granddaughter Murphy Trammell. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held July 12 at Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Church in Lakeside, California, starting at 10 a.m. Committal Service will follow at Miramar National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in Tom's memory, to Cathedral High School, 1253 Bishops Road, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
