Born in Akron, Ohio, Von lived most of his life in the area. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was employed with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, retiring in 1991 with 26 years of service.
Von was a graduate of Ohio University and Akron East High School. He was a very active member of the reunion committee for the East High School Class of 1947.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Henson and brothers, Julian Smith, Harley Smith, Jr., and Robert Smith. He is survived by his wife, Viona M. Smith; daughters, Karen Smith of Canton, Lynn (Thomas) Dean of Cape Coral, Florida; and grandson, Craig Von Dean. He is also survived by Viona's children Christine (George) VanBuren, Kathleen (Thomas) Mumaw, John (Dana) Singer, and 10 grandchildren. Other family members include sisters-in-law, Betty Smith of Texas and Ruth Smith of Georgia.
The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle), with Rev. Barry French officiating. Interment will be at Tallmadge Cemetery.
