Melvin Lee Vicars 1934-2015 Mel passed away on the evening of August 14, 2015 at the age of 81 in Houston, Texas. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family. Mel was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 3, 1934 and was the oldest of three children born to Melvin Lee Vicars, Sr. and Betty Alan Brewer Vicars. Growing up in Oklahoma City he attended Central High School where he honed his basketball skills. After graduation he married his high school sweetheart Jackie Skinner. Mel joined AT&T in 1955 and was subsequently drafted into the Army and was stationed in Germany in 1956/57. After serving, he rejoined AT&T where he built a career spanning 30 years. His job took the family from Oklahoma City to Kansas City, Missouri and finally to Houston in 1971. Mel retired from AT&T in 1984. Not one to sit around, he joined H.I.S. Communications as a Communications Consultant and retired again after 10 years. Mel was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church since 1972 where he was an Elder and Head Usher for more than 40 years. He was an avid golfer loved playing and coaching basketball and enjoyed travelling and taking cruises with his family. Having felt fortunate to survive major heart surgery in 2002, Mel became a volunteer for the Mended Hearts program and spent the last 13 years sharing his experiences and touching lives on the 7th floor of Memorial Hermann/Memorial City hospital. The family would like to express its gratitude to the many Doctors and Nurses at Memorial Hermann/Memorial City hospital who loved and cared for him. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jackie, his children, Julie Fontenot and her husband Kirk, David Vicars and his wife Lauren, grandchildren, Jordan Fontenot, Jacob Fontenot, Anna Vicars, Alan Vicars and John McGregor and his wife Katie, and great granddaughter, Ava McGregor, his sister, Sylvia Jones and brother James Vicars. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30pm at the Grace Presbyterian Church chapel on Tuesday August 18, 2015, 10221 Ella Lee Lane, Houston, Texas 77042 with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Mel's honor to Grace Presbyterian Church.
