Enlisted for 12 months' service on 11/10/1861 at Cusseta, Chattahoochee County, he was mustered into Company G, 27th Georgia Infantry, as a Private. (This company subsequently became 31st Georgia Infantry.)
Reenlisted for 3 years' service 11/10/1862.
Present on all rolls until absent, on furlough of indulgence, Nov & Dev 1863 Roll.
Present on all subsequent rolls until Killed In Action in Battle of Smithfield Crossing, WV.

The 31st Infantry Regiment completed its organization in November, 1861, at Cusseta, Georgia. Its companies were from the counties of Muscogee, Chattahoochee, Monroe, Bartow, Pulaski, Dawson, and Newton. The 31st participated in various conflicts from Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley, and took part in the final campaign at Appomattox.
