Howard Cecil Mitchell, a 96-year-old resident of Burley, died Friday, June 29, 2018.
He was born February 4, 1922, in Burley, Idaho. He was the oldest child of Grace C. Larsen and Clyde Mitchell. He attended Southwest, Miller and View grade schools, Burley Jr. High, and graduated from Burley High School in 1940.
Howard's father passed away when he was six years old. His mother married Walter "Curly" Quast and Curly became his new dad. When he turned nine, Curly would take Howard with him on his milk route on Saturdays and during the summer. Howard would take the empty milk cans off the truck while his dad put the full ones on. He learned to work hard at a young age.
When Howard was 17 years old, he had the responsibility of doing his own milk route, which he did every day before school started. Just before graduating from high school, he was offered a job at the Jerome Cooperative Creamery. He would do his milk route, deliver it to the creamery and then go to work at the creamery. At the creamery he tested the cream that was brought in and then would help make casein [a slow-digesting dairy protein that people often take as a supplement] from milk.
In September of 1942, Howard was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Camp Barkley in Abilene, TX, where he worked in the motor pool. In 1944, he left Camp Barkley for New Guinea, and then went to the Philippines in January 1945.
While in the Philippines, he contracted hepatitis. He was sent to Dewitt General Hospital in California until the war was over and then to Letterman General until he was well enough to return home. He was honorably discharged from the army in May of 1946.
Howard married Reva Banner on November 3, 1950 in Burley, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS Temple in July of 1951. Howard and Reva had three daughters and one son.
Howard worked as a truck driver and salesman for Lee Wright, Fred Allen, Larry Adams, and Dale Smith. He delivered gasoline, diesel and fuel oil to farmers, businesses and homes. He always carried candied suckers in his truck to give to the children of his clients. He was a dedicated and loyal employee. After retiring, he drove potato and beet trucks in the harvest for his son-in-law, Kent Searle, for 14 years.
Howard was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, including Sunday School superintendent, Stake Young Mens president, Stake athletic director, High Councilor, Ward Executive Secretary, Ward Clerk, and home teacher. He served a mission at the Bishop's Storehouse. He fulfilled all of his church assignments with complete dedication, often sacrificing time with his family.
Howard and Reva served as ushers at the King Fine Arts Center for the Mt. Harrison Foundation for many years. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at Snowbird Resort each summer. He loved his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To many of them, he was known as Grandpa M&M.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Reva; his parents; stepfather; three brothers: Keith L. Mitchell, Gerald L. Quast and Walter F. Quast Jr.; three sisters: Verlan Hronek, Beth Jenkins and JoAnn Wilkins; and a great-grandson, Jase Jordan Searle.
He is survived by his children: Diane Fullmer (Steve), of Blackfoot, Carolyn Laird (Gary), of Ogden, UT, Marilyn Searle (Kent), of Burley; and Howard Reese Mitchell (Kathy), of Lehi, UT; 15 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; brother, Harold L. Quast (Sharon); and sisters: Maxine Connely (Raymond) and Marion Rudman (Joe).
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - View 2nd Ward, 490 E. 550 S., of Burley, with Bishop Michael Searle officiating.
