"JOHNSTOWN --- Melvin Coons, 75, former area resident, died about midnight Thursday in Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after being stricken earlier in the evening while a passenger in an automobile. * * * COONS WAS traveling with his granddaughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Simpson of Richmondville, to Oneonta from their home, when he was taken ill. He had resided with his granddaughter for the past five years after having lived in Caroga, Town of Ephratah since 1930. He as born in Middleburg, Schoharie county, March 23, 1882. A leather worker by trade, Coons retired about 10 years ago from the Modern Tanning Co. of Gloversville. He was a member of the Bleecker Street Church of Christ in Gloversville and the Rockwood - Caroga - Lasselsville volunteer fire department. * * * SURVIVORS INCLUDE two daughters, Mrs. Harley later of Seward and Mrs. James Starr of Garoga; three sons, Everett Coons of Sammonsville, Lester Coons of Garoga and Melvin Coons Jr. of Meco; one sister, Mrs. Jonah Aker of Middleburg; one brother, Elmer Coons of Central Bridge; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow, in the A. G. Cole funeral home. Rev. Victor Zaccarro of the Richmondville Methodist Church will officiate.
