Community mourns victim of train accident
Herald-Standard; 04/24/2007

SOUTH CONNELLSVILLE - It started out as such a wonderful day, but ended so tragically, was the sentiment expressed several times Monday by those grieving the loss of a little girl who was killed Sunday while celebrating her birthday with a family fishing outing.

The fatal accident took place along the Youghiogheny River, near the South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club, as the youngster and her parents and brother were crossing the adjacent railroad tracks and a CSX freight train struck the girl and her mother.

Investigating officer, state police Trooper Jeffrey Ramsey, said the family had begun the trek back from the river and across the three set of tracks to the gun club property when the two were struck by the oncoming train.

"(The father and brother) had started across a little sooner and when (the father) heard the train whistle he advised his wife and daughter to wait," said Ramsey. "For whatever reason, they didn't."

Evidence at the scene, said Ramsey, indicated that the mother and daughter were only a few steps from avoiding the accident.

"It is very tragic," he said. "Given everything that I've learned, there was nothing the engineer could have done."

"There was a witness who said that there was a whistle blown well in advance (of the train's approach)," said Ramsey.

"It is so very sad," said Dunbar Township Elementary School principal Vincent DiPaolo as he talked about the death of Michelle, a second grade student at the school. "I walked out to her van with her Friday after school; she was so excited about her birthday; she had been talking about it to everyone all week."

"She was a sweet little girl and we are going to miss her," he said.
