The son of John A. & Elizabeth (Pearson) Spealman, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Huntington Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 24, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 1 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. C, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Annie lnu. in 1873 and fathered Emily F. (b. @1875, d. 03/14/82) and Jessie (b. @1880). In 1890, he lived in York Springs, Adams County, where he ultimately died from "arteriosclerosis."
